What Is Electrotherapy?
Electrotherapy covers a variety of physio treatment modalities including those involving electrical current, heat, cold and ultrasound. It is very important to note that these modalities are an adjunct or an assist to physiotherapy treatment. Seldom should they be the entire physio treatment.
In the past, Electrotherapy gained a poor reputation as it was often overused in physio treatments – many physio clinics of old would see a high number of patients a day and would manage them by utilising the passive modalities of electrotherapy whether it was appropriate for the condition or not. These days, there are very few of this style of physio practice left (thankfully!)
That said, Electrotherapy has many therapeutic uses and benefits which can assist in injury recovery.
Electrotherpay can help:
- Reduce pain
- Reduce swelling
- Improve muscle function & strength
- Improve tissue healing
At Dunbar Physio, we both appreciate the benefits or and understand the limitations of the Electrotherapy modalities. Where and when appropriate, we may the following at our clinic:
- Interferential Current Therapy (IFC)
- Ultra Sound Therapy (US)
- Transcutaneous Nerve Stimulation (TENS)
- Neuromuscular Electrical Muscle Stimulation (NEMS)
- Moist heat
- Ice Therapy
